Limassol
Limassol, on the south coast of Cyprus, is the country's
second largest city. It lies between the sites of
two important historic city kingdoms that dominated
the island in antiquity: Amathus to the east and
Curium a few miles to the west. Both have yielded
some of the most remarkable archaeological finds
in the eastern Mediterranean.
Today, as the island's
main port and a thriving business center, Limassol
is regarded as Cyprus’ most progressive city.
It also sports a carefree, fun-loving air. This is
apparent through two colorful festivals, rooted in
its past, which set Limassol apart as the entertainment
capital of Cyprus. Spring Carnival, an exciting fortnight,
echoes centuries of religious history, while the
ever popular September Wine Festival reflects one
of the world's longest traditions in viniculture.
With its modern shops and restaurants, high standard
of medical services and reputable schools, Limassol
offers its visitors and residents a high standard
of living.
And there's no shortage of culture in
this south coast town with its museums, castles,
theaters and galleries. Within easy reach are some
of the island's most celebrated historical monuments.
