Renovation work combines contemporary design with traditional architecture
NEW YORK, Oct. 9 // -- IBEX Construction, a New York-based
firm specializing in corporate and institutional construction, has
completed the lobby renovation project for Columbia Business Schools Uris
Hall, located at 116th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenues in New
York City.
IBEX provided construction management services for the project, which
included the refurbishment of the 2-story entry hall and first-floor lobby,
as well as the Student Academic Affairs Suite. The 4,400 square-foot area
was completed in time for the beginning of the fall semester.
"We were very pleased to open the academic year with the new Uris Hall
lobby," said Glenn Hubbard, Dean of Columbia Business School. "The
renovated space has become a popular gathering spot and has generated
positive feedback from students and faculty alike."
"The contemporary updates and finishes modernize Uris Halls public
areas without dominating the existing architecture," said Andy Frankl,
president of IBEX Construction. "IBEX Construction has worked on a number
of renovation projects in prominent and historical buildings around New
York City, so we were well qualified to take on this project for Columbia
Business School."
The renovation infused a fresh, contemporary look with the addition of
glass walls and glass and stainless steel handrails. The buildings
monumental staircases provide a clean, flowing surface from the floor to
new Venetian plaster walls, which highlight the reflective quality of the
glass.
A newly installed wood-paneled ceiling complements the lobbys marble
walls. Corridor walls have been redone with bead-blasted finish on
stainless steel panels, listing the names of the schools benefactors.
In the center of the grand lobby, students can access a new electronic
kiosk, finished in stainless steel and opaque glass. Three video monitor
banks, encased in stainless steel, are suspended from the ceiling, and new
cantilevered upholstered benches provide areas for students to congregate.
"We take great pride in maintaining and enhancing the buildings on our
historic campus," said Sean Joyner, Interim Associate Vice President of
Capital Project Management at Columbia University Facilities. "The
renovation of Uris Hall emphasizes our commitment to this mission and is
befitting for one of the premier graduate business schools in the world."
Originally designed by Moore and Hutchins and completed in 1964, the
architect for the renovation of Uris Hall was Belmont Freeman of New York
City.
"I am extremely gratified to see my design executed so flawlessly by
IBEX Construction," said Belmont Freeman, A.I.A., and a principal of
Belmont Freeman Architects. "This renovation gives Uris Hall a new public
image -- a fitting symbol of the greatness of Columbia Business School."
