TIGARD, Ore., Feb. 17 // -- "We had the smoke in our kitchen
under control by 5:10 this morning and guests were back in their rooms by 5:30
a.m., but it was a call-in topic on local radio as recently as an hour ago,"
says Charles Holt, General Manager at the Embassy Suites Tigard. "My staff
and I are just scratching our heads."
He mused that the rumors about a blaze at the hotel got out of control
faster than any fire could have.
"At about 4:50 this morning, I got a phone call that I needed to come to
the hotel, because the fire alarms were going off. I live a mile away, so I
called my property response team and came right over."
When Holt arrived ten minutes later, the local fire crew was already at
the hotel and the Central Command Officer told him he need not evacuate any
guests. "The officer told me in fact, our fire system had worked properly and
the smoke was already clearing from the hotel."
The hotels owning and managing company, Windsor Hospitality Group, had
installed a top-of-the-line smoke evacuation system as part of their recent
$5.5 million renovation at the property. With this system, large fans blow
all smoke from the kitchen and guestroom areas into the atrium, where
evacuation fans clear it from the building altogether.
"When the fire alarms went off, we alerted the guests that they should be
prepared to evacuate, but some chose to stay in their rooms," says Holt.
Those who did leave their rooms had gone back to bed within 45 minutes. No
one was asked to step outside the hotel.
"Right after the fire crew left, I typed a letter for the guests
apologizing for the inconvenience and had my staff put a copy under every
guestroom door," he says. The Embassy Suites complimentary breakfast started
on schedule at 6:30 a.m. Holt and his team remained in the atrium until 9:30
to personally field any questions and express their regrets for the
disruption.
"All of the guests were very light-hearted about the incident. Most made
comments that it was better to be safe than sorry, that they were actually
impressed about how well we had handled the situation. I had no complaints
from anyone."
