News and Information Article
CHICAGO, May 25 // -- As Memorial Day kicks off the
expectedly busy summer travel season this weekend, United Airlines provides
customers tips to make their travel experiences easier.
Tip #1: Allow extra time at the airport.
-- Follow recommended guidelines for airport arrival times: For travel
within the United States, United typically recommends arriving 60
minutes before your flight if you are not checking bags and 90 minutes
before your flight if you are checking bags. For international travel,
United typically recommends arriving two hours before your flight.
Customers traveling from Uniteds largest airports (such as Chicago
OHare, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington Dulles)
should consider arriving an additional 30 minutes earlier than these
recommended times.
-- Be at the gate and available for boarding on time. Reservations and
seat assignments are subject to cancellation if you are not checked in
with a boarding pass at least 30 minutes prior to departure time and
available for boarding at the gate at least 20 minutes prior to
scheduled departures between U.S. cities and Canada, Mexico and the
Caribbean. For other international flights, you must check in and
obtain a boarding pass at least 45 minutes prior to departure time and
be available for boarding at the gate at least 30 minutes prior to the
scheduled departures.
Tip #2: Be familiar with security wait times, which vary by airport,
time of day and day of week.
-- Check united.com for pertinent security line information such as peak
times, peak days, peak and off-peak line waits.
-- Use frequent-flyer security lines, Uniteds priority security lines
designated for United First(R) and full-fare United Business(R)
customers, Pass Plus(R) customers, 1K Mileage Plus(R), Premier
Executive(R) and Star Alliance(R) Gold members. These priority lines
are available at Chicago, Denver, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Los Angeles,
Minneapolis, Phoenix, Portland, San Francisco and Seattle.
Tip #3: Save time and avoid check-in lines by using a self-service
check- in alternative.
-- Use EasyCheck-in Online(SM) and earn 500 Mileage Plus bonus miles when
checking in on united.com up to 24 hours prior to departure.
EasyCheck-in enables customers to print boarding passes, select seats,
confirm upgrades, request upgrades and add Mileage Plus number.
-- Use EasyCheck-in kiosks at the airport to print boarding passes,
choose seat assignments, change flights, fly standby, rebook travel
during weather or other irregularities, and request or redeem
upgrades.
-- Take advantage of Uniteds Check&Go curbside service, which provides
valet-like check-in capabilities for a nominal fee -- now including
the ability to receive a boarding pass for U.S. domestic flights and
proceed directly to security.
Tip #4: Check the status of your flight before leaving for the airport.
-- Check united.com or call 1-800-UNITED-1 for up-to-the-minute
information about a flight, including departure and arrival times and
gate information.
-- Sign up for United EasyUpdate, a complimentary service that
automatically notifies customers of flight departures and arrivals,
delays, cancellations and seat upgrades by sending a message to a
designated home, office or mobile phone, e-mail, pager or fax.
Tip #5: Make sure carry-on and checked baggage is within legal size and
weight limits.
-- Carry-on bags - U.S. federal regulations allow only one carry-on bag
and a small personal item such as a briefcase, purse or laptop.
-- Checked baggage -- Uniteds free checked-bag allowance includes two
bags weighing no more than 50 pounds each. For bags heavier than 50
pounds, there is a $25 fee per bag. Customers traveling
internationally are allowed two free checked bags weighing up to 70
pounds per bag.
